The Lily Pad is next to Thorpeness Meare, in the centre of Thorpeness
Thorpeness can be found on the Suffolk coast. This small village feels like entering a bygone age, and is very pleasant indeed for a few days peace & quiet.
Thorpeness was developed in the early 1900s as a holiday retreat, with many of the buildings being in the Jacobean and Tudor Revival styles. At the centre of the village is the vast Thorpeness Meare - this huge boating lake is a splendid location to play about on the water for a few hours; and you don't need to be a great sailor either - the water is only a few feet deep.
Thorpeness has a shingle beach, which you can easily walk along to the larger town of Aldeburgh, about 2 miles south. This is a very pleasant walk, and something we try to set aside time to do a few times each year. Aldeburgh has a good choice of shops, pubs and restaurants. After the walk from Thorpeness it's worth getting some fish & chips from the famous chip shop
, and sitting on the beach to enjoy them (just watch the blinkin' seagulls though). You can round off your gastronomic delight with an ice-cream from Ives Ices
